Multiple white sharks pinging in the Gulf: putting recent detections into scientific context

Current observations remain consistent with the established seasonal pattern and do not, at present, indicate an exceptional season.

Editorial Note: Recent reports of several satellite-tagged white sharks transmitting from within the Gulf of St. Lawrence have generated considerable public and media interest. While these observations are newsworthy, this release is intended to place them within their proper scientific context. The available evidence does not, at present, demonstrate that the 2026 season is exceptional or that the level of risk to the public has materially changed. The St. Lawrence Shark Observatory (ORS) has received numerous requests for interviews following the recent detection of several OCEARCH-tagged [1] white sharks within the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Although the appearance of multiple tagged sharks over a relatively short period has naturally attracted attention, the observations reported to date appear consistent with the seasonal pattern documented during recent summers.

Based on long-term ORS observations and recent peer-reviewed research [2,3], white sharks have become regular seasonal visitors to Québec and Atlantic Canadian waters, particularly in regions supporting abundant grey seal populations. A systematic analysis of acoustic telemetry data identified an increase in the probability of tagged white sharks migrating into Atlantic Canadian waters beginning around 2019, together with a longer seasonal detection period. Although this evidence supports an increase in the species’ use of northern waters, it does not establish how many white sharks are currently in the Gulf or demonstrate that 2026 is unprecedented.

Satellite detections represent only a small fraction of the population

ORS cautions against interpreting the number of satellite-tagged white sharks detected in the Gulf as a direct measure of the total number of sharks present. Only a small, non-random subset of the Northwest Atlantic white shark population carries SPOT tags whose positions can appear on public tracking platforms. The composition of this sample changes as new sharks are tagged and older tags stop transmitting, and it does not necessarily reflect the age or sex composition of the broader population. Other telemetry systems are not represented in the same way: acoustic transmitters register only when sharks pass compatible underwater receivers, while PSAT tags archive data while attached and transmit after detaching and floating to the surface. They therefore do not provide ongoing public positions comparable to those generated by SPOT tags.

A SPOT (Smart Position and Temperature) tag mounted on a dorsal fin transmits to the Argos satellite system only when the tag is at the surface. Calculating a position generally requires consecutive transmissions during a satellite pass, so many surfacing events do not yield a successful location. Transmission schedules, satellite availability, surfacing behaviour, tag condition, and environmental conditions can all affect which positions are recorded.

Consequently, the sharks shown on public tracking platforms represent a valuable but incomplete sample of a broader population. More detections may reflect more active tags or more successful transmissions, not necessarily more sharks in the Gulf. Conversely, an absence of satellite detections is not evidence that white sharks are absent. Although public trackers are useful tools for following tagged individuals, they are not population censuses.

Scientific interpretation

The current detections fit a broader increase in white shark presence documented in Atlantic Canadian waters over the past decade [2,3]. The mechanisms behind that change remain unresolved. Plausible and potentially interacting factors include legal protection and population recovery, changes in the distribution and abundance of grey seals and fish prey, changing oceanographic conditions, redistribution within the Northwest Atlantic, expanding scientific monitoring, and improved public documentation.

Recent research suggests that natural population growth alone is unlikely to explain the speed of the observed increase in Atlantic Canadian detections, which points to an important role for redistribution and environmental change. At the same time, no single factor, including seal abundance or ocean temperature, has been shown to explain the pattern by itself [2]. The 2026 satellite transmissions therefore cannot be used on their own to determine abundance, isolate a cause, or conclude that ecological conditions are unusual.

This distinction matters because presence, detection, and abundance are different measurements. A shark may be present without being detected, a tagged shark may transmit repeatedly, and changes in monitoring effort may alter the number of recorded detections even when the underlying population is unchanged. Comparisons among years must account for those limitations.

White shark ecology is complex and continues to evolve

Based on more than two decades of ORS research, including field investigations, historical and archival work, and ongoing molecular studies, together with archaeological evidence, Indigenous knowledge, and peer-reviewed literature, white sharks are increasingly understood as a long-standing component of the marine environment of Atlantic Canada and the broader Gulf of St. Lawrence region. White shark teeth recovered from mortuary and ceremonial contexts on the Maritime Peninsula date from approximately 5,000 to 950 years before present, supporting a human–shark relationship measured in millennia [4,5]. These sources do not provide a historical abundance estimate, and the species’ distribution and frequency almost certainly varied over time.

For this reason, ORS encourages caution when interpreting, sharing, or relying on simplified explanations of shark behaviour, whether encountered on social media, in news reports, or through other public sources. Marine ecosystems are rarely explained by a single factor, and responsible scientific communication should distinguish clearly between established evidence, informed hypotheses, preliminary observations, and personal opinion.

Shark-related information now circulates rapidly, and the public is often presented with opposing but equally misleading narratives: white sharks are portrayed either as an imminent danger or as completely harmless. Neither extreme reflects the available evidence. White sharks do not exhibit one simple or universally predictable pattern of behaviour. Their actions at any given moment may be influenced by environmental conditions, prey availability, competitors or other attractants, time of day, life stage, prior experience, and individual behavioural differences. No universal set of rules can reliably predict how every shark will behave in every situation.

Recognising uncertainty is not a weakness of science. It is essential to scientific rigour. Interpretations must evolve as new evidence becomes available, and many questions remain about white shark abundance, habitat use, movements, and seasonal ecology in Québec and Atlantic Canada.

Newsworthy does not necessarily mean unusual

The detection of several satellite-tagged white sharks within a short period is newsworthy and provides valuable information about the movements of those individuals. From a scientific perspective, however, the observations appear consistent with a seasonal pattern that has become familiar in recent years. Repeated coverage without that context can unintentionally magnify the perceived novelty of the situation and cause needless alarm. Unsupported reassurance can be equally counterproductive by encouraging complacency.

The statistical risk of a shark-related incident in Canadian waters remains low to very low under most circumstances, but it is not zero and varies with circumstances [5]. Marine users should remain aware of local conditions, avoid large seal concentrations and murky water when practical, pay attention to unusual wildlife behaviour, and consult verified information.

The appropriate response is neither fear nor complacency, but proportionate awareness: understand that white sharks are seasonal visitors, respect the conditions that can increase risk, and make informed decisions when using the marine environment.

Responsible coexistence also requires respecting the animals themselves and the legal protections that apply to them. White sharks are protected under Canada’s Species at Risk Act. They should never be pursued, harassed, baited, intentionally approached, or disturbed for photographs, video, or social-media content [6].
